Behind the Beehive
The goal of this piece was to use 3-D objects to aid in its creation, through a process known as imprinting. The brainstorming process for this piece was quite extensive, as I experimented with different objects before choosing the ones that I could visualize a finished piece for. I also tried using colored pencils to imprint the texture underneath the paper before realizing that was not the look I was going for.
I used a small lego block, thread, and coins for my first brainstorm.
For my second brainstorm, I tried to create an interesting composition using different objects, including leaves, staples, and gear toys.
After going through these first stages, I had determined what objects to use: I had settled on the lego block, thread and staples. I knew that I wanted to create some sort of beehive because the logo imprints resembled a honeycomb.
I then proceeded to create templates of the bees and flowers that I wanted to include in my final piece.
In the final stages of my experimentation, I tried various organizations of the bees, flowers, thread, beehive and branch.
I went full-scale with my final drawing, on a 23" x 18" paper. I used staples for the branches, templates for the flowers and bees, thread for the bee path, and legos for the beehive. I created shadows for emphasis using a graphite stick and finally added highlights using a white gel pen.
